After our successful Teachers Lounge in which we heard from April Pelfrey, Eli Cochran, Jay Mathis, and Lee Ann Pessoney, we had some customers reach out with some follow up questions. You'll find our guest instructor's answers below:
- Can you type the name of the company that donated parts?
- Eli Cochran: This was a local company that is an Energy supplier - IGS Energy.
- Why use PC Pro for Cyber I?
- Eli Cochran: Students need to have a good understanding of basic computers and PC Pro/CompTIA A+ is a good start for that.
- April Pelfrey: I use PC Pro as a filler. They need to understand what is in a computer before they can fully understand how a network works. Network in cyber is important. Most of the students will come out of high school and into entry level IT Support positions understanding the computer will be important.
- I think my biggest challenge is building the program as a new teacher, finding the time to teach, create new curriculum and keeping up on paperwork. How do you do it?
- Eli Cochran: It’s hard. I ask this same question all the time. I just take one thing at a time and do what I can.
- April Pelfrey: Good Luck! lol Time management and also relying on what is already out there instead of creating new content or curriculum. People across the country are doing this....successfully. Take what is out there. Will you have to change it up for your students and your classes...yes. But don't waste time trying to re-invent the wheel.
- What tools, such a Hak5 products, do you use/demonstrate in class?
- Eli Cochran: This is a good question I have at least one of everything from Hak5. Students really like the USB rubber ducks. Just in the last year, I have gotten kickback from our district IT department and students are now no longer able to use the Hak5 gear. I personally feel use whatever your budget and IT department allows! These are tools students need to have an understanding of and know how to use!
- Only focusing on Security Pro, Ethical hacker Pro, & the new CyberDefense Pro - what order will work best?
- Eli Cochran: I don’t think you can only focus on these without some prerequisites. Personally I say if you have no time constraints this would be my order. PC Pro, Network Pro, Security Pro, Linux Pro, Ethical Hacker Pro, CyberDefense Pro.
- What resources did you use to get your program started?
- Eli Cochran: Google, other teachers, forums, YouTube.

Intro to digital tech - I would suggest IT Fundamentals but not the complete course because you have to cover things outside IT in the standards for IDT.
-
Intro to Cyber - Network Pro and I pull a little PC Pro at the beginning
